Harley engine changes ended oil leaks and started rubber mountings in what year?
I know old school harley engines had metal expansion rates that didn't match and so were constant oil leaks waiting to happen, and I also know the sportsters added rubber mounts in 2004, when did the other models like softails do this and when did the new engine design that ended the oil leak problems start? In other words, if I buy a softail, what year or newer does it need to be to have rubber engine mounts if they ever did, and have the new metal that doesnt expand unevenly and doesnt leak constantly?
No such thing as a rubbermount Softail...at least an HD..there are some aftermarket frames that are though.
HD started rubbermounts on the FLH models in 1980. Which epanded into the FXR line in 1982, In 1991, HD redesigned their rubbermount bikes and brought out the Dyna. In 2000, the Softail engine became a BALANCED engine, the crankshaft is counter-balanced, but still is rigidly mounted to the frame, this new design actually produces less vibration than the rubbermounted bikes, but is limited to 6200rpm due the the weight of the two counter balancers. And in 2004, like you said, the Sportster finally became rubbermounted...it was about time too....the Sportster based Buell's had been rubbermounted since 1996.
Bikes prior to 1985 (shovelhead and earlier) were the MAIN bikes that had metallurgy issues, iron cylinder/aluminum heads & cases. In Late 1984 HD introduced the Evolution engine, which was a great leap forward, alot less leaking due to dissimilar metals, but HD, along with everyone else in that era, were still in the dark ages when it came to gasket technology. They still had leaks, MAINLY cylinder base gaskets. In 1999 HD introduced the Twin Cam engine, almost leak free. Properly maintained and serviced, this engine is excellent. The only real drawback is...99-06 models had spring loaded cam chain tensioners which tend to wear out at 20-30K miles and require replacement. There is an kit to upgrade them to the 07-up hydraulic tensioners which last about 40k miles....or better yet, can be upgraded to better performance aftermarket GEAR driven cams.
The Evolution engine was 80cid, the 99-06 TC's were 88cid, and 07-up are 96cid, the TC's can be upgraded in size rather easily to 103, 110, 113cid.
The new HD's are VERY reliable, smooth running bikes, which bike is right for you????....Only you can decide that, find out from some local dealers when they are having a test ride event, and go try a few....you will find one you like.
